Having some fun carving ️

So this happened yesterday 🙁. Ben phones me about 10am saying he fell over in PE (tripped on those long legs). He had seen the nurse and she said he was ok. The nurse bandaged his wrist. He did ask to come home but since the nurse said all was good I suggested he would be ok to stay at school especially since there was a history exam. Poor BEN stayed at school all day and I have been crowned ‘Mother of the Year 🤦🏻‍♀️’. The doctor took one look at it and said it is fractured but let’s get an X-ray to confirm. Ben was very happy about missing out on PE at school for the next few weeks. However I reminded him he needs both hands to play his clarinet. You should have seen his face.....poor guy was gutted! Let’s hope the next 3-4 weeks pass quickly.

Ben is very spoilt here in Bangkok. We have domestic help so dishes, laundry, cleaning is not something he usually does. He does set and clear the table but that is the extent of it 😬. I am becoming concerned we are raising a son who won’t be able to look after himself........So teach Ben domestic duties has begun. Tonight he washed some dishes. Two dishes in he says ‘Washing dishes is really boring’ 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️. Yep sounds like a normal 12 year old. Oh this will be fun!!

Being sick in another country is tricky. Influenza A recently invaded our house (all on the mend now). Going to the doctors in Thailand is not like seeing your local GP at home. How we miss Dr Stieler! You go to the hospital here and because we don’t speak Thai the process is not always clear. I found it very difficult not to cry when I was given all this medication that I had no idea what it did. We didn’t take any of it except the flu antiviral and some panadol I already had a home. We really need to learn more Thai and stop living in our expat bubble!! My taxi and shopping Thai does not help at the hospital 🤣

Absolutely amazing to see the Terracotta Warriors today.....over 2000 years old and discovered in 1974 by a farmer. There are so many new discovery sites (over 600) in this area of China. What an exciting time. I wish I was an archeologist.

How cute is this? I’m totally hooked on folding my plastic bags like little samosas ️. We really do try to reduce plastic bag usage here in Bangkok. Unfortunately even when I ask for no plastic bags my grocery order is delivered in recycle bags full of groceries in plastic bags . However we always reuse them. Anyone who follows @_thisgirlcanorganise already folds their plastic bags. She is totally addictive to follow. So here are the steps to make these cute samosas 1. Smooth bag flat.2. Fold bag in three.3. Fold a triangle on one end.4. Continue to fold triangles. 5. Tuck ends in fold 😀

We had an interesting walk home from dinner tonight. I spotted this street vendor that I hadn’t seen before. I’m not actually sure I want to see that again 😕. I don’t think I could bring myself to eat these birds. However poor Ben had a terrible time tonight. Because he has blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes people sometime touch him. He hates it. It hasn’t happened much lately but tonight.....well!! The lady at the restaurant tried to touch and cuddle him a number of times, a random lady on the street grabbed him but the strange guy was a worry. It all happened so fast. A strange guy looked to be walking past Ben but he quickly stopped, jumped up and down and flicked him in the face. So NOT cool!!! SO NOT COOL!!!!

Well hello there!

Really Google Maps? Ok so let me start by saying I have NO ZERO NADA sense of direction......absolutely none, my driving skills in Bangkok are of a beginner and I mostly drive close to home. Well today was an adventure!!! I picked Ben up from school and the traffic was heavy on the way home so I consulted google maps for an alternative route. Andrew always uses the back streets so I thought I’d give it a go. I started on back streets, then somehow ended up on the freeway, paid a toll, existed that freeway to go on another freeway and pay another toll. Drove some more back streets and got tooted a lot. Rang Andrew who laughed at me and was no help at all. Paid another toll, made some very questionable uturns (one on Asok) and drove some more back streets with tight corners. We made it home, had an adventure and it only took 1 hour and 10 minutes. I can’t totally blame google maps. There may have been some driver error and now I’m not so scared of the freeways!

I LOVE school projects!!! I have spent my morning hunting China Town for Roman Soilder LEGO to no avail. So I have spent the last hour adapting what I found. One Roman Soilder made and an army to go . Then the real fun starts - the stop go animation and power point presentation. I am a serious nerd! Oh did I mention this is Ben’s project......he is totally in charge

Carpark FUN ! Ok so my driving skills are questionable.....but I think the car parking at Ben’s school has pushed them to the limit. As you can imagine in the middle of Bangkok parking is limited. While Ben’s school endeavors to find more car parking this is how it is right now. There are three maybe four car parking attendants directing traffic. They insist on reverse parking . This in itself is challenging for me but add two or three Thai men yelling directions in Thai and using contradicting hand signals it’s a freaking disaster. It’s overwhelming being watched and hurried. They also double park cars and push the cars back and forth to let cars out. This morning I was motioned to be one of the cars to be pushed even though there were car spaces available (I think I’m too slow at reverse parking). I had to leave the car in neutral and the park break off. I wasn’t very happy about the car pushing thing but I let it go. For some reason I couldn’t lock the car but didn’t think anything of it in a rush to get into school. School drop off done I return to my car. I hear my car before I see it. For some reason I have no idea the stereo was on blasting Christmas carols! What on earth had I pressed before getting out of the car!!! Geez I’m a reverse parking Christmas carol playing genius!

So it’s been a couple of weeks and my driving is a little better in Bangkok. I have been told the key is move with the traffic - don’t stop. So today that included driving on the wrong side of the road and going through two red lights . I took these pictures while sitting in traffic. There are lots of interesting vehicles on the road here.

He is off to his Year 5 Residential full of excitement!

I’m having a ‘Mummy Moment’........this little guy isn’t so little anymore. He turns 11 in a few weeks. Tomorrow he heads off for his first school residential - 4 days, 3 nights (school camp Bangkok style). He is anxious but excited. I am doing a really great job of pretending I’m super excited for him. I suppose I am excited but I’m also WORRIED OUT OF MY MIND! Will he sleep? Will he eat? Will he wash? What if he hurts himself? Will he lose all his belongings? ......Will he be ok without me??? My mind tells me of corse he will but my heart aches. He has grown up so fast....too fast ️️

The crazy Tuk Tuk driver!

Our crazy Tuk Tuk tonight.

Occasionally I forget how crazy Tuk Tuk drivers can be. I always say Char Char Ka (slow please) but mostly they laugh. Tonight’s driver thought he was Evil Kenevil! He was crazy! He kept tooting this toy horn for buses, cars and motorcycles to get out of the way. It’s a toy horn......for goodness sake. It belongs on a toddlers bike!!!!! We made it home in one piece but none of us are in a hurry to get in a Tuk Tuk anytime soon!

Family night at home tonight. Has anyone played UNO Attack before?We love UNO but UNO Attack is also great. Especially when it spits 6 cards at the winning player!!! There is even a couple of new cards. One that you can choose to swap your hand of cards with another player. I owed the swear jar 60 baht by the end of the game. Clearly by the look of my hand I was not the winner 🤣

The Sanctuary of Truth, Pattaya. The sanctuary is a wood building filled with sculptures based on traditional Buddhist and Hindu motifs. It’s breathtaking.

We spent the weekend in Pattaya with our gorgeous friends @lisa_sandaver. On Saturday night we went to a Muay Thai fight. It was amazing, vicious, exciting and a little terrifying. I have decided I like the fighting when it ends friendly with a happy ending and no one knocked out........but I’m told that is not the end goal 🤔.

NERD ALERT! My new LEGO minifigure boxes have now all arrived in Bangkok (thanks to family and friends bringing them over in their luggage!!) It’s time for my minifigure wall to grow. Eeeeeee I’m excited !!!

Ben’s new money raising initiatives. 1. Nintendo Switch Jar - all money welcome (all cash gifts, pocket money or change Ben finds goes in here). 2. The swear jar -20 baht per bad word. Ben asked me to back pay 500 baht 🤣🤣🤣. He got home from school today and asked me if I had said any bad words. He put 20 baht in the jar just incase!!!

I honestly cannot believe the change in Ben since he recently moved schools. He is like a different child. He loves school, he is excited to join in classes, he plays and instrument, he loves his teachers and he thinks writing his school blog is the best. While we were away we had two amazing ladies look after our little girl. These are some of our Penny updates over the past few days ️

We are home in Bangkok relaxing with a cup of tea and the best ANZAC biscuit I have had in two years (the only one but it's good).

ANZAC Day dawn service at Hell Fire Pass. The sun was just rising and the birds started to sing......goosebumps. To get to the Pass we had to descend 140 stairs and walk the rocky trail of the old rail line in the dark. You can almost hear and feel the clanking of the pick axes as the soldiers worked.

It was an early morning 3am. It was close to 40 degrees and the humidity was off the charts. This little guy did us proud. He is standing in front of Sir Edward Weary Dunlops memorial in Hell Fire Pass.

Just as the sun has risen, the wreaths laid and the flags raised 🇦🇺

My boys ️ (It's not very often I get them both smiling, looking at the camera and their eyes open.....score!)

We are staying here in Home Phutoey tonight. This is where Sir Edward Weary Dunlop's ashes were scattered. He met Khun Kanit (the past owner) when Weary was traveling past on the river. Weary and his travelers stopped in hope of buying some beer. They didn't buy beer but they were invited to join Khun Kanit and his family for a beer. The two became good friends. Every year on the eve of ANZAC DAY Khun Kanit families host a dinner in Weary's memory. Sir Edward Weary Dunlop was the amazing surgeon who amputated my grandfathers leg in CHANGI POW CAMP.

A bit of an emotional morning. I had no idea I would be so affected by visiting here. We laid flowers on a young Australian Soldiers grave. He was 24.....so young. Lest We Forget

Alert - a bit of a whinge! I miss my car!!! Most of the time walking in Bangkok is not a problem. I have come to expect the heat, the crazy foot paths, the hanging power lines, the motorbikes on the footpath, the street vendors and dodging people on their phones. I will however never get used too Bangkok juice. What is Bangkok juice I hear you say........well it's the liquid goop that sprays on you feet and legs. You never really know what it is but it doesn't smell good. You think your safe when you find a paved footpath to walk on but NO you need to beware of the squirters. The squirters are the pavers that have goop underneath them hidden. They are just waiting for you to stand on them and then.....SQUIRT.......the goop is all up your legs. So that my friends is my whinge about Bangkok juice. I have just finished washing my shoes, feet and legs ️

This little guy received an academic improvement award at school today. He was shocked, a little embarrassed but super proud. (And yes this is the best photo I got. My boys do t like photos and didn't make it easy 🙂)

Going to the doctors here is an experience. It's not like going to your GP at home. You go to the hospital. I came in today because I ran out of my asthma medication and waited too long to go to the hospital to replace it (as I hate the hospital). I had two asthma attacks this week......scary but my own fault. So here I am at the hospital. They wanted me to sit in a wheelchair which I refused. I'm not dying. I have been poked, had X-rays and goodness knows what else. I really only need my asthma puffers. It's going to be a long morning. I miss my GP 😕. At the moment I'm in the pulmonary health clinic. Lesson learnt - do not run out of asthma medication in Bangkok.

Ok..... I went into this massage parlor and asked for a coconut oil leg massage. I'm always a little nervous to ask for anything else. . I took off my shoes and waited in the leg massage chairs. The male owner looked at me and shook his head and said 'No, no on bed'. The beds had the curtains down for some privacy. But there where still gaps. I thought 'Ok I get to lay down for this leg massage'. So I make myself comfy and lay down. The massage lady comes in, looks at me and shakes her head saying 'Clothes off, clothes off'. Then proceeds to pull off my top and points to my shorts. Then she undoes my bra! Ummmm ok I thought 'we have lost something in translation here but I can do this'. Then just as I'm unbuttoning my shorts (nice of her to let me do this part) I remembered 'Oh crap!! I have my most comfy granny panties on!!! Crap crap crap!!!'. I was standing there topless In front of the massage lady who had nicely put a peg on the curtain so the whole world could not see me in all my glory. I whipped my shorts off said to myself 'What the hell!! Let's do this!!!' As I lay down I can hear a man on the bed next to me snoring.....hehe! OH MY GOODNESS it was the best massage I have ever had - 60 minutes for 500 baht ($20). The massage lady did giggle at my granny panties though

This adventure in Thailand is amazing. I count my lucky stars everyday that Andrew, Ben and I are together and our Fly In Fly Out life is over for now. Saying that........parts of this is really hard. We are coming into birthday month for our families. I love birthdays and the celebrations they bring. My Dad turns 70, Andrew's Dad turns 80, it's my birthday, Andrew's birthday, my Mum's birthday and Andrew's Mum's birthday all in the next little bit. This time of the year there is always lots of family, lots of celebration and lots of love (and crazy). I know I used to take it for granted. Now I miss those hugs hello when you walk into friends and families homes, I miss the noise of little people playing, I miss cooking cakes, I miss little people running through my house, I miss watching my family celebrate together and laughing together and I miss watching all the nieces and nephews help blow out birthday candles. SO DON'T FORGET TO FACE TIME SO WE CAN BLOW OUT THOSE CANDLES WITH YOU xxx

Ok! I'm melting!!! I arrived home today (after a hair appointment, manicure and pedicure - life is tough) to no power and no lifts. I decided to take a stroll to the university markets up the road. I don't break rules. I'm just a nerdy rule follower. So this morning I feel like a rebel!! After climbing the 30 flights of stairs I followed my (always a rule breaker of a) husband through the doors that read DO NOT ENTER and out onto our apartment buildings roof. So fabulous - there was a cool breeze and it was surprisingly peaceful!! (But I'm still waiting for someone to knock on the door and reprimand me ️)

Ben's first homework. He had to make a shelter for his pet rock he called 'Spiderman'. I wanted to help but he wouldn't let me. Apparently Spiderman's house can fly and all he eats is chocolate.
